Introducing Super Koine Quest: A Free New Testament Greek Vocabulary Game

by | Oct 13, 2026 | Greek | 0 comments

Anyone who has studied NT Greek vocabulary with flashcards knows the routine: review, forget, review again. While it works, it’s not a lot of fun. Super Koine Quest is my attempt to make learning vocab fun.

Super Koine Quest is a free New Testament Greek vocabulary game that runs in your browser, on a computer or phone. You explore dungeons, defeat monsters, and learn Koine Greek words along the way.

Play Super Koine Quest now.

How the Game Works

You explore dungeons, one at a time. The door to the next dungeon stays locked until you’ve done two things:

  • Step on every yellow tile. Each one asks you to pick the correct English gloss for a Greek word. Get it right, and the tile unlocks.
  • Defeat every enemy. Enemies ask you vocabulary questions too. A wrong answer costs you health. A right answer defeats the enemy and earns gold and experience.

Every dungeon teaches you new words, and bosses show up every few dungeons with longer fights.

Learn New Words and Review the Ones You Miss

The game keeps the pace steady, so you meet new vocabulary at a manageable rate. Enemies bring you new words instead of repeating ones you already know.

The words that come back are the ones you got wrong. Each missed word returns after a short gap, then a longer one, and then a longer one after that, until you’ve answered it correctly three times. That’s spaced repetition, built into the dungeon.

When you miss a word, the game shows it with its gloss so you can see the right answer before moving on. At the end of a run, you get a list of every word you missed, which you can copy and paste into your own notes or flashcard app.

Choose Your Vocabulary Level

The word lists are based on how often words appear in the Greek New Testament:

  • Beginner: 312 words used 50 or more times
Intermediate: 329 words used 20 to 49 times
Expert: 493 words used 10 to 19 times

Study One Book at a Time

Single NT Book Mode lets you pick a New Testament book and practice only the vocabulary from that book. It’s useful if you’re reading Philemon, Jude, or 1 John in Greek and want to learn the words before you read. The run is sized to the book, so a short letter is a short game. Books become available as I add their word lists.

Come Back Every Day for the Daily Koine Quest

The Daily Koine Quest is a short dungeon built around a new Greek passage each day. You learn the words from the passage as you play, and when you clear the dungeon, the passage is revealed. It’s a quick daily habit: one dungeon, a handful of words, and a verse.

Track your Progress

The Progress & Achievements screen shows how many words you’ve mastered in each mode, which ones are still due for review, and your daily streaks. There are 27 achievements to earn, from your first five defeated enemies to clearing a dungeon without a miss.

Gold, Vending Machines, and Power-Ups

Defeating enemies earns gold. You can spend it at vending machines scattered through the dungeons on armor, capes, health drinks and other power-ups. You’ll find music that changes as you go deeper, and dungeons that change look as you descend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Super Koine Quest free?
Yes. It’s free to play in your browser, with no account or download.

Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On a phone you move with an on-screen D-pad or by swiping, and you tap your answers.

Do I need to know Greek already?
No. The Beginner mode starts with the most common words in the New Testament, so it works for first-year students. The Intermediate and Expert modes add less common vocabulary.

Where is my progress saved?
In your browser, on the device you play on. Clearing your site data erases it.
